US citizens in Russia could be forced to fight Ukraine, the embassy warns as Americans were urged to pull out now

The announcement comes days after the Russian government began mobilizing its citizens into the armed forces in support of its invasion of Ukraine.

“Russia may refuse to recognize dual nationals as U.S. citizens, deny them access to U.S. consular assistance, prevent them from leaving Russia, and conscript dual nationals into military service,” according to the U.S. embassy and consulates in Russia.

The embassy also warned that commercial flights from Russia are currently extremely limited and often unavailable at short notice.

Overland routes by car and bus remain open, the embassy added.

“If you wish to leave Russia, you should make independent arrangements as soon as possible,” the statement said.

“The U.S. Embassy is severely limited in its ability to assist U.S. citizens, and conditions, including transportation, may suddenly become even more limited.”

Up to 2,000 protesters have been arrested in Russia over the Kremlin’s plans to send up to 1.2 million to Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin tried to quell protests by increasing the prison sentence for deserters to up to 10 years in a penal colony – and applying the new law to anyone who refused to “mobilize”.

He signed amendments to the penal code outlawing desertion and surrender with a sliding scale of new penalties.

Thousands of men eligible for conscription have been seen fleeing Russia, some of whom have reportedly broken their own arms trying to escape conscription.

A stampede of single men has also been reported going to registry offices to marry women with multiple children – as family men can escape conscription.

Online searches for the phrase “how to break your arm at home” also increased as potential conscripts considered drastic action.

It is Russia’s first such mobilization since World War II – marking a major escalation of the war, which is now in its seventh month.

But recently conscripted militants in Russian-held eastern Ukraine are said to be surrendering in droves, and humiliating footage has emerged of drunk conscripts fighting each other as they are herded onto school buses.
