Urgent shark warning for beachgoers after man hospitalized in brutal attack off US coast

Police are telling millions of Americans to remain vigilant as they hit the beach after a terrifying shark encounter.

The 20-year-old Miami-Dade County man, whose name has not been released by authorities, was bitten by a shark while spearfishing with two other people Thursday afternoon.

According to the police, the traumatic incident happened around 3 p.m Florida Keys Sheriff’s Department.

The people accompanying the man reportedly took him back to shore in a private boat and took him to the Sunset Grille & Raw Bar.

A nearby bridge temporarily closed in both directions to allow a Trauma Star helicopter to land and transport the critically injured man to a medical center.

The law enforcement agency announced At Twitter that the bridge reopened less than an hour later.

Police are urging everyone to remain vigilant about marine activity and follow safety protocols, even though shark attacks are not common in the Florida Keys.

In 2022 there were a total of 57 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks worldwide, down from the recent five-year average of 70 incidents per year between 2017 and 2021.
