Shannon Fraser recounts his story to WESH2explains how a boy who “looked like 12 years old” had run to her for help.

The boy told Fraser that his phone was dead and that he couldn’t find his family or friends. He asked to borrow her phone to contact them.

“Your first instinct is to help a child,” Fraser told the outlet.

“Without thinking, and with hindsight it’s 20/20, I just gave him the phone.”

The boy opened Fraser’s map app. She was standing nearby watching the guy borrow her phone.

What she didn’t realize was that he had also opened her Venmo app and made nearly $4,000 worth of transactions.

Two days after the meeting, Fraser received a notification that her two Venmo transfers had been approved.

“I died on my way,” she said.

When he contacted Venmo, Fraser noticed that the bank account to which the money was transferred was set up less than an hour before the boy requested assistance.

Fraser told WESH: “I feel like this is the new pickpocket.

“They’re hunting for your kindness instead of just stealing something from you.”

Venmo could not be immediately reached for comment. However, the company told WESH that while it is aware of similar incidents, it has not seen an increase in reports of this nature.

Fraser said the money was credited to her account on Tuesday night.

In response to the issue, Venmo users are encouraged to set up their Face ID and pin code if they haven’t already done so.

This is an extra layer of protection against theft and incidents like the one experienced by Fraser.

Venmo users can access website for instructions on setting up pin codes, Touch ID, and additional layers of security.
