The suspect was identified as 27 years old Alexander Wyatt Campbell of Ashland, who was detained.

Two school employees, John Painter and JJ Jefferson, were killed in the shooting, according to an email sent to students and staff.

“These officers are close friends, what many of us refer to as the ‘dynamic duo.’ John was JJ’s best man at his wedding this year. They have been beloved by students, faculty, and staff. I grieve for their family and loved ones, as I know we all do,” Bridgewater University President David Bushman said in an email.

Bridgewater College issued a warning on their social media page shortly after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday following reports of an active shooter.

At the time of the lockdown, one social media user at the scene suggested there were victims, likely including a police officer on the campus.

Students are asked not to panic in the presence of police on campus and in buildings when the orderly shelter is in operation.

Although the lockdown has been lifted, people are still advised to avoid the college and the area around it.

“I have been briefed on the situation at Bridgewater College. The shooter is in custody and state and local police are on the scene,” Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin said at the time. that point.

“I will continue to monitor the situation in conjunction with law enforcement.”

Bushman called the incident “a sad and dark day for Bridgewater College.”

“I know we all have a lot of questions and not many answers. One thing I do know, however, is that we rally around each other and support each other as we move forward from this day on.

“We are all victims, although some more than others, and it is important for each of us to seek comfort and support in the ways that make the most sense to us, ” he said.

Governor Youngkin ordered the flags to be flown at half-mast Wednesday in honor of the two school officers killed in the shooting.

Approximately 2,000 students attend Bridgewater College.
