The research grants pay students to explore topics ranging from porn video games and selling sex on OnlyFans to robot fetishism.

One English student at Birmingham University is even looking at how dwarf sexuality is portrayed in the Lord of the Rings books.

Another at Queen Mary University in London is examining the impact of Brexit on LGBT sex.

Taxpayers partially fund research into the sexual experiences of newborn women, dementia patients and gay Japanese men on social media.

Funding for the studies is being provided by UK Research and Innovation – a non-governmental organization that receives £8 billion in public money annually from the Business Department.

More than £500m of this will go towards funding research in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Independent experts decide which research projects will be funded based on the “quality and likely impact of that research”.

Tory MP Neil O’Brien told The Sun: “There are so many more important things research money should be doing. We cannot afford to waste scarce resources on such things.”

UKRI did not comment last night.
