Unbelievable stats show Julian Alvarez, not Lionel Messi, is Argentina’s key man in the Man City star-less side struggle

LIONEL MESSI is the man so many would describe as Argentina’s key player but stats may have shown that Julian Alvarez is the most important for the team.

Argentina are gearing up for a blockbuster World Cup final against reigning champions France on Sunday.

Lionel Messi hopes to take home the World Cup gold boot when he takes on PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe in the final.

Nobody has more goals or assists in the tournament than Messi, with the PSG star scoring five and also providing three assists.

But despite the praise for Messi, a stunning statistic has shown he may not be his nation’s most important player.

OptaJavier revealed on Twitter that Lionel Scaloni’s side have yet to concede with Alvarez on the pitch and they have so far scored 11 of their 12 goals in Qatar when he played.

The stats suggest that in addition to being a threat going forward, he also helps his team defend from the front.

The forward has scored four goals and provided one assist in the six games he has played in at the World Cup so far.

He was used as a substitute in the first two games but has started the following four after impressive cameos and poor performances by other players.

Alvarez scored twice as his side edged past Croatia in the semis to win 3-0.

The Manchester City player doubled Argentina’s lead with a stunning solo goal that started in his own half after Messi’s opener penalty.

He then scored his side’s third goal by standing at the end of an excellent Messi assist.

Despite the 22-year-old’s apparent quality, he plays second fiddle to Erling Haaland at Manchester and has only played 90 minutes in the Premier League once this season.

Alvarez joined Pep Guardiola for just £14million last January but his value is expected to skyrocket following his recent performances.
