BORIS Johnson said last night that nine out of 10 besieged Ukrainians were ready to fight to the death if Russia invaded.
His revelation came when the US sent 3,000 troops to Eastern Europe.
The prime minister said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had told him that any Russian invasion would lead to a brutal and bloody conflict.
In a phone call yesterday, Mr. Johnson also urged the strongman Moscow Vladimir Putin to retreat from a catastrophic clash.
Upon returning from Kiev, the Prime Minister said: “One thing that we have been told very clearly is that 90% of Ukrainians are going to fight.
“They have 260,000 in defense and 160,000 on contract – and they promise this will be a full-fledged war.
“The military action actually looks extremely irresponsible but they are making pretty detailed preparations for an invasion.”
Officials with US President Joe Biden said 2,000 of their troops would be flown from North Carolina to Poland and Germany, while another 1,000 would be rushed from Germany to Romania.
Mr. Putin denied that he was ready to invade Ukraine, but the presence of more than 200,000 troops near the country’s border forced the United States to bring it down. A Sun team on Ukraine’s northern border discovered that the military was strengthening its defenses in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster area, fearing that it could open the door to any attack on Kiev.
The UK has 200 military personnel in the country – with a population of 44 million – to assist with any British evacuation.
