AN EXPERT has claimed a “revealing” conversation between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and his defense minister sent a clear message – but not the one he was hoping for.
Russian media broadcast a painfully staged conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, in which the two discussed and reflected on concerns about the conflict.
Putin said to Shoigu: “We must always think, but in this case even more so, of preserving the life and health of our soldiers and officers.”
Adding to his “alleged” concern for the well-being of his troops on the ground, the President said: “Please submit proposals for state awards to be bestowed upon our distinguished soldiers.”
“It is clear that in such cases it cannot be otherwise, these are different awards, but I want everyone to know: according to our understanding, they are all heroes, according to the understanding of all Russia.”
Speaking to The Telegraph, Leonid Volkov, chief of staff to jailed Russian opposition activist Alexey Navalny, said the broadcast was a “revealing moment”.
Volkov added that Putin’s public statements are always just what they wanted to hear.
“When Putin says something in public, it is almost always because the presidential administration has measured public opinion and concluded that it is now necessary to speak in order to score political points.”
