Temperatures have soared to 21C in recent days, but parts of the UK could drop as low as -3C before the snow settles.

From Wednesday a band of snow will move down from the north, blanketing Scotland and the northern parts of England with about four inches of snow.

By Thursday it will have moved across northern parts of England, possibly falling as much as nine inches, according to WX charts.

Two or three inches will settle on the ground in Wales later in the week and Northern Ireland should also see some excitement.

Showers are also expected to hit large parts of the country, with many turning into wintry thunderstorms amid freezing temperatures.

Tomorrow will be the last of the mini heatwave, with temperatures reaching 19C around 2pm.

The Met Office’s chief meteorologist Paul Gundersen said: “Although the UK has had much fine and calm March weather in recent days, a change is afoot from the middle of next week as colder air spreads from the north and there is an increasing likelihood of rain for the most areas.

“There is a chance this will fall as snow on the hills to the north, although we will have more certainty of that in the coming days.

“Being influenced by some volatile weather patterns, we will see a significant drop in temperature for most as colder air moves in from the north.

“This will cause maximum temperatures to drop into the single digits for many areas and drop below freezing overnight.”

Snow is expected to pack up to four inches in Scotland
