PITTSBURGH (AP) – John Harbaugh won. The gamble cost the Baltimore Ravens and kept the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North.
Pittsburgh topped Baltimore 20-19 on Sunday, thwarting a 2-point conversion attempt after Lamar Jackson’s touchdown pass to Sammy Watkins helped the Ravens within one with 12 seconds to go.
Instead of turning to star striker Justin Tucker for an almost automatic extra at 35 yards, the Ravens (8-4) took the knockout punch. Baltimore’s tight finish Mark Andrews couldn’t get past Jackson. The Steelers (6-5-1) recovered an internal kick to seal it.
Pittsburgh ended a three-game winless streak after a 39th comeback in the fourth quarter designed by Ben Roethlisberger.
The 39-year-old midfielder threw 236 yards and two touchdowns in the second half for Diontae Johnson, the final game being a 5-yard catch and run with a score of 1:48 that gave the Steelers a 20-13 lead.
That is enough. Just enough.
Jackson knocked Raven 60 yards in eight plays, the last six coming with Watkins’ somersault behind the final zone. Offense remained on the field for the 2-point conversion, choosing to do it even after Pittsburgh surprisingly called the timeout to reset.
The Steelers put pressure on Jackson – continuously for more than three hours – and his hasty throw was too far ahead for Andrews to make.
Jackson passed 253 yards with a touchdown and interception in the bottom half of the field in the first half. He rushed the team 55 feet tall, but also absorbed seven bags, including 3 1/2 by outside star TJ Watt after he went out of practice for the week after being put on the COVID-19 list .
A day after ESPN – using anonymous sources – reported that Roethlisberger had told several on the team that this could be his final season, he battled a slow first half to add Another chapter in his long history with Raven.

Johnson made up for a rare first-half slump that could have resulted in a goal by finishing with eight 105-yard receptions and two points.
The Ravens dominated the first half – including a 99-yard driveway that lasted more than 10 minutes – but took a 7-3 lead to show for it.
The Steelers were hung there behind a defense that didn’t let Jackson feel comfortable, enough time for Roethlisberger to summon a bit of the magic that has defined much of his stellar career.
Ravens: CV Patrick Mekari left in the second half with a hand injury and did not return.
Steelers: G BJ Finney passed away in the first quarter with a back injury. Finney was replaced by John Legule, who made his NFL debut.
Field judge Mike Weatherford left the field early in the fourth half after running into trouble with Chase Claypool after winning 40 yards.
Crows: Take the seasonal sweep of the Browns when they arrive in Cleveland next Sunday. Baltimore had its first meeting on October 16 last week.
Steelers: Facing a short week with a visit to Minnesota scheduled for Thursday night.
