POLICE has launched an investigation after two men were killed in a horror fireball car crash.
Two men in their 20s were killed after a car collided with a lamp post and caught fire in Harbourne, Birmingham, yesterday.
A third man, also in his 20s, was taken to hospital in serious condition after attempting to exit the vehicle following the incident on Hagley West Road around 10pm.
One witness described how the vehicle – the Toyota Yaris – became “a ball of fire” after the incident.
They said there was “nothing” emergency crews could do to save the victims, who have yet to be officially identified.
Family members arrived on the scene within hours of the crash and looked distressed.
Hagley Road West, a vital route linking the city center with the M5 motorway, remained closed for about eight hours before reopening.
Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes said: “We are in the early stages of determining exactly what happened and we would still like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time.
“We are asking anyone who was traveling along a two-way street and saw a red Toyota Yaris prior to the collision – or has information about the crash – to contact us.
“We would appreciate it if the driver could check their control cam as anything captured could support our query.
“This is a devastating time for the families of the victims and we urge everyone to come to us with any footage, rather than speculate and share potentially distressing material online. .”
Officers urged those who witnessed the crash or anyone with dash cam footage, to go ahead.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: ‘On arrival, officers discovered three patients in the vehicle were on fire.
“Two of them, the driver and a passenger in the vehicle, were seriously injured in the collision.
“Unfortunately, it was immediately clear that nothing could be done to save them and they were confirmed dead at the scene.
“The third patient, a male passenger, received advanced trauma care at the scene for his serious injuries before he was transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further treatment. .”
Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting log 4263 of 11/01/22.
