TV presenter Michael Strahan launches into space on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket – National

Football star and TV celebrity Michael Strahan took a flight into space with Jeff Bezos’ rocket launch company on Saturday, sharing the ride with the daughter of America’s first astronaut.

Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket exploded from West Texas, sending the bullet into a 10-minute flight with two VIPs and four paying customers. Their bullet rose to an altitude of about 66 miles (106 km), providing a few minutes of weightlessness before parachuting into the desert. The rocket has also successfully landed.

It was five minutes and 50 miles (187 km) shorter than Alan Shepard’s Mercury flight from Cape Canaveral on May 5, 1961. His eldest daughter, Laura Shepard Churchley, carried a small piece of the capsule. Freedom 7 as well as memorabilia from Apollo 14’s Moon and Golf Ball in memory of her father, who hit several balls on the lunar surface.

Effervescent bubbles in Good Morning America Updates all week, Strahan packed his Super Bowl ring and retired the New York Giants number 92 jersey. “Pretty SURREAL!” he tweeted the night before the launch, which was delayed by two days due to dangerously high winds. Bezos also stored a soccer ball in the capsule, to be awarded the Pro Football Hall of Fame after the flight.

Bezos, who flew into space in July in the same capsule, accompanied six passengers to the launch pad near Van Horn. He drew “Light this candle” on the bridge of the launch tower, borrowed from Alan Shepard’s famous hilt from within Freedom 7 as the delay increased: “Why don’t you fix your little problem and light this candle?”

Shepard Churchley volunteered for the third Blue Origin passenger flight. She heads the board of trustees of the Astronaut Scholarship Fund.

“It’s fun when I say that an original Shepard will fly over the New Shepard,” she said in a pre-departure Blue Origin video.

Bezos, who founded Amazon six years before Blue Origin, had its first launch in July. The second, in October, includes actor William Shatner – Captain James Kirk of the TV original Star Trek. Leonard Nimoy’s late daughter sent a necklace with a “Vulcan Salute” charm on this flight, in honor of the show’s original Mr. Spock.

The automatic, reusable sleeping capsule is especially crowded this time around. Instead of four, there were six in flight.

Of the four space tourists paying unspecified millions, each is the first father-son pair: Financier Lane Bess and his son Cameron. Also flying: Voyager Space Chairman and CEO Dylan Taylor and investor Evan Dick.

Blue Origin dedicated Saturday’s premiere to Glen de Vries, who launched into space with Shatner in October, but died a month later in a plane crash.
