NEWCASTLE are four points away from the relegation zone after beating Aston Villa 1-0 at St James’ Park.
The Magpies have now won three games in a row, boosting their hopes of survival.
Right-back Kieran Trippier scored the only goal of the game in the 35th minute from a free kick.
It was his second goal for Toon since arriving from Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window.
Villa had an equalizer for Ollie Watkins to be disqualified shortly after VAR marked the hour for offside during an assist.
Steven Gerrard’s men have now won just one top-flight game out of their last six.
They are still in 11th place when they missed the chance to take the lead against Southampton into the top 10.
