Police said the 13th grade student at John Henry Newman School was taken to Lister Hospital but died of his injuries in the early hours of Saturday.
An 18-year-old was arrested.
Heartbroken Texas aunt Corrie Everett gave a touching tribute to her nephew after the tragic murder.
She wrote: “On Friday 27th May 2022 my handsome, talented, bright nephew Kajetan Migdal was murdered by a complete stranger on his way home from prom in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.
“As a family, we are completely shocked and devastated by this great loss.
“He had his whole life ahead of him and an exciting summer planned, and a sick, evil individual took it all from him and from all of us.”
Devastated, Corrie said Kajetan – who had a love of dance and animals – is survived by mother Gemma (Corrie’s sister) and father Janusz, as well as younger brother Fabian.
She added a statement from her family: “Kajetan was a loving, cheerful young man with a bright future.
“He was known for his love of dance, animals, hard work and caring friendships.
“As a high performer at school and in his hobby, he was prepared for great things. He had just finished school and could look forward to his life.
“The entire family is devastated at the loss of a loved one and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”
Corrie has now set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral and travel expenses.
Corrie wrote on the page that Katejan’s family is scattered all over the world from Poland to Menorca and cannot afford the trip.
The fundraiser had raised over $13,400 as of Saturday night.
Detective Inspector Justine Jenkins, of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire’s Serious Crime Unit, said: “Although an arrest has been made we are continuing to follow a number of lines of inquiry and are still asking for witnesses or anyone with information about what happened to contact us.
“I would like to thank those who have reached out so far.
“Extensive investigations are being conducted to unravel the sequence of events leading up to and following the fatal incident.
“Special officials are assisting the victim’s family and we ask that their privacy be respected at this time.”
It is unclear why the person was arrested.
Anyone who believes they witnessed the incident or believe they have dashcam footage is asked to contact police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting the May 27 reference 948.
