“We use pile moss, flat moss or lichen. All are preserved and intended for use in paintings. The choice depends only on the customer’s requirements. Individual types can be combined to form images, captions or logos,” says Nikola Štípalová, product manager at the company PFM-Greenvia, which creates such images for private and commercial use.
The lichens used come from Finnish or Norwegian forests, the moss comes from Spain and France. After collection it is dried, they mummifypreserve and color.

The beauty of moss is not eternal
Mosses are not suitable for damp rooms, direct sunlight or places without air circulation and are sensitive to mechanical damage. “However, their biggest advantage is that they are maintenance-free and no care is required as they stop growing. They do not need to be moistened or watered. On the other hand, moisture is undesirable as it could cause mold or other deterioration. They are therefore a good solution for people who need a beautiful and at the same time maintenance-free design Green. And that is the main difference between moss paintings and vertical gardens made of plants that are still alive and need to be watered, fertilized and maintained,” says Natálie Šefrnová, who takes care of the vertical garden service at the Němec showroom in Prague.
Just as mosses are installed, entire plants can also be installed. They can be used to create a picture, an arrangement or an entire wall.
Moss paintings are a living organism and therefore have a lifespan. “Different suppliers quote different margins. Some say paintings can last up to 15 years. For us the lifespan is 5-8 years. Then the image can be revived by adding new moss to places where it has already faded or no longer looks beautiful,” says Nikola Štípalová.
