The delays were even greater as over 5,000 US flights were put on hold.
The cancellations come as millions of Americans prepare for extreme winter weather hitting the middle of the country, including Texas.
Dallas Love Field Airport and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport have the most cancellations.
Southwest Airlines canceled about 12 percent of its scheduled flights Monday and American Airlines about 6 percent.

Several airlines, including Southwest, American Airlines, Delta and United Airlines, have issued weather waivers during the extreme conditions, allowing customers to rebook their flights at no additional cost.
A total of 908 flights within, in or out of the USA were already canceled tomorrow.
East Idaho has been hit by record-breaking freezing temperatures.
Temperatures dropped to -38 degrees overnight at Island Park.
A new record low for January 30 was set after the Idaho Falls dropped to -30 degrees.
The extreme weather has also created treacherous driving conditions.
There could be up to half an inch of ice or sleet in parts of Texas, the National Weather Service warns.
The NWS said at least 15 states could expect ice accumulation.
“If you must travel, slow down and use extreme caution, especially when approaching bridges and overpasses,” the Texas warning said.
The NWS advises drivers to have a flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency.
