The dangerous health condition of his mentor Dr. Bishop becomes Dr. Putting Bashir “Bash” Hamed’s own future at risk in the hospital transplantation makes its US debut in Season 2 this Sunday (NBC, 10/9c).
With Bishop still unconscious after his second stroke, Bash feels a whirlwind of emotions, especially considering the two men’s growing bond and the fact that Bash was operating on Bishop at the scene. “[Bishop has] Become a friend, mentor [and] father figure [to Bash]and after going through the loss that Bash suffered before, he feels extremely guilty, very vulnerable,” star Hamza Haq tells TVLine, “and just wants to make sure Bishop just comes back and carries on as usual because there is one Security and comfort he hadn’t felt since probably before the war in Syria.”
But with Bishop off duty, a new acting director of the ER, Dr. Mark Novak (played by Gord Rand), pulls the safety net farther away from Bash. “This new boss has a very different approach to medicine than Bishop,” Haq describes. “He’s more the MSF type, disregarding protocol, rules and authority just like Bashir. But he is not a bishop either.”
So while there is “a familiarity with the how [Novak] Directing Things,” which fits Bash’s own background, Bash “feels reluctant to trust anyone who isn’t exactly in Bishop’s good books,” Haq continues. “This internal conflict is something that’s being explored for the entire relationship between Bash and Novak.”
Warns John Hannah, who plays Bishop: “[Novak is] certainly long enough that given some of the questions Bishop faces, how he behaved and the choices he made in season 1 not only put himself in danger, but he too as Bash’s mentor and protector could be a certain danger.”
In addition, Bash faces a major upheaval in his personal life as well with the arrival of Rania (Nora Guerch), the mysterious woman who showed up at the hospital at the end of Season 1, much to Bash’s shock. “She is someone that Bashir had a relationship with in Syria and he thought he lost [her] completely,” teases Haq. “They haven’t seen each other since the war separated them. And with her re-entering his life, it questions a lot of things.”
