Transfer news LIVE: Newcastle and Arsenal want Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic, Juventus keen on Mason Mount – updates

Broja blow could mean transfer rethinking

Chelsea could be forced into a transfer reconsideration as Armando Broja could miss the rest of the season after scans showed he had torn his cruciate ligament and required surgery.

The Albanian striker went down in cries of pain during the first half of his friendly against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Broja, 21, struggled for the ball with Villa defender Ezri Konsa, who, along with team-mate Robin Olsen, immediately called for medical attention.

Broja was treated on the ground for a long time before finally being lifted onto a stretcher and taken away.

The Albania international returned to London with the Blues squad on Monday before undergoing a scan to assess the damage.

And the devastating news means the former Southampton loanee will need to be on the sidelines for at least five months, although it could be longer.

Broja’s injury leaves Graham Potter very short up front.

The forward has one goal and one assist in 12 Premier League games so far this season after being the backup for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is now the club’s only senior striker.

There were no big spending plans during the January window, although the long-term nature of Broja’s injury means Potter could be forced to bring in a new striker.
