Chelsea want exceptions
Chelsea are reportedly set to seek exemptions from Premier League spending rules after spending more than £300million in the January transfer window.
New owner Todd Boehly has wasted no time pulling out his checkbook since arriving at Stamford Bridge, with the American having spent £600m on 17 PLAYERS since arriving in May last year.
And now, after spending all that money over the last nine months, The Mail reports that Chelsea will seek exemptions from the Premier League’s spending rules if they file their accounts at the end of the season.
They do this by arguing that they were unable to generate income for three months in 2022 when the previous owner, Roman Abramovich, was sanctioned by the UK government.
The regulations dictate that a club can lose up to £105million over a three-year period.
Chelsea were at risk of breaching those year-to-2021 restrictions.
But like several other clubs, the Blues received special bonuses due to the pandemic.
Now they hope to get similar exceptions again.
It’s not yet clear how the Premier League will respond to Chelsea’s request.
