And now an already desperate situation has been exacerbated after Eric Dier was suspended for the second leg.

Dier received a warning for a foul on ex-Arsenal and Chelsea star Olivier Giroud.

In the 63rd minute, the defender came into contact with Giroud, who swerved away with the ball before Dier dragged it to the ground as he tried to hold on to it.

The act left Swiss referee Sandro Schaerer no choice but to wave a yellow card.

Spurs have had inconsistent league form in recent weeks and had hoped the Champions League would pause against an out-of-form Milan side.

But Brahim Diaz quashed that thought when he netted within seven minutes of a superb work from left-back Theo Hernandez.

Fraser Forster had made an impressive double save to keep the Italians at bay but needed more help from his defense when Diaz jumped the highest to win a header from point-blank range.

It would also prove to be the only goal of the game as Harry Kane was turned down by the bar and Milan also stopped adding more.
