He played a key role in helping Steve Cooper’s side progress through the play-offs to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years.

His outstanding form has caught the attention of numerous clubs such as Brentford, Arsenal and even Bayern Munich.

Nottingham Forest are also trying to secure a deal that will keep him at the club permanently.

But according to the Express, Tottenham are currently leading the transfer race for the star and will push a bid in the coming weeks.

Fabio Paratici, Spurs’ managing director of football, traveled to Nottingham in February to see Spence in Forest’s 4-0 win over Leicester City in the FA Cup.

He was so impressed that he has since been keen to pursue a deal that is expected to cost the right-back around £15million.

Tottenham are also aiming for the move to meet Premier League and Champions League requirements for homegrown players.

The regulations state that each team must have a minimum of eight native players and a maximum of 17 who are not.

In April, the Telegraph revealed Antonio Conte was keen on signing English talent this summer, with Kalvin Phillips, Tariq Lamptey and Spence all being mentioned.

Spurs have almost completed the signing of Fraser Forster on a free transfer from Southampton – he will act as a backup for Hugo Lloris which will give the club a huge boost.

They are also on the lookout for another striker, with Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku emerging as a potential target.

Conte is reportedly keen to reunite with the Belgian after the pair found success together at Inter Milan.

Tottenham are expected to lose a number of players this summer, including Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso and Steven Bergwijn.

Bergwijn recently declared his desire to leave the club in the next transfer window after being frustrated with a lack of playing time. Tottenham ‘interested in Djed Spence transfer after giving up foreign options for fulfilling non-English quotas’
