Tottenham are keen to re-sign Dennis Cirkin from Sunderland – just a year after he left the academy candidate

TOTTENHAM have shown a keen interest in Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin, whom they released just last year.

Cirkin, 20, has attracted attention with the Black Cats since the Championship move and Spurs are exploring a possible return trip to the capital for their former academy prospect.

The north London club surprisingly let him go and managed to inflict further shock by offering to bring him back.

However, that could be part of a lavish move to sign Dublin-born Cirkin and sell him to a rival soon after.

Cirkin is fit again from a recent injury and Spurs will be keeping an eye on him ahead of the January transfer window.

The 6-foot defender came through Tottenham’s academy system after moving to London from Ireland aged three.

He made five appearances on the Spurs first-team bench in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

In August 2021, the Lilywhites allowed the promising ace to join Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

In his debut season at the Stadium of Light, he made 41 appearances, mostly at left-back.

Those games included the full 90 minutes of his side’s League One play-off final triumph against Wycombe.

Cirkin started on the left side of a back three in Sunderland’s first eight league games this season.

After returning to fitness, he returned to the bench for this weekend’s clash with Swansea.

The England Under-20 international is hoping to be in action next time as Sunderland hosts Wigan.
