A TORY MP faced backlash last night for saying millions of Britons don’t need food banks, they just need to learn to cook properly.
Lee Anderson said the cost of living crisis has gotten worse because many people can’t prepare a meal from scratch and budgeting their money is difficult.
He made an open offer to other MPs to visit his constituency in Ashfield to see a “real food bank” showing those in need how to cook inexpensive meals “for around 30p a day”.
Former coal miner Mr Anderson told the Commons there would be no need to dish out food if more people were taught to cook healthy, cheap dinners.
He said: “Generation after generation can’t cook properly, they can’t make a meal from scratch.
“You can’t budget. The challenge is there.
“Come to Ashfield…come to a real plaque that’s really making a difference in people’s lives.”
But critics accused it of being “crass and cruel” as millions of Brits face a choice between heating or eating.
Karen Buck, Labor’s shadow jobs and pensions secretary, slammed: “Out of contact doesn’t even cover it.”
