Toddler, 3, fatally shot mother Dejah Bennet, 22, in a car that was parked outside a Chicago store and dad is now facing gun charges

The father of a 3-year-old boy who accidentally shot and killed his mother over the weekend may face gun charges, police said.

The family were sitting in their car in the Food for Less parking lot in suburban Dolton when the boy somehow got hold of the gun and shot it at his mother.

The father was in the driver’s seat, the mother was in the passenger seat, and the boy was in the car seat in the back.

Dolton Police said the boy’s parents did not know he had a weapon before he opened fire, stabbing 22-year-old Daejah Collins in the neck. Related press reported.

The boy’s father, Romell Watson, 23, is believed to have been taken into custody following the shooting.

He will be charged with unauthorized use of a firearm, the Associated Press reports.

Dolton Sheriff Robert Collins Jr. said investigators were working to determine the exact allegation against Watson.

There was no indication he had fired the weapon or even knew the boy was holding a weapon at the time of Saturday’s shooting.

Investigators determined Watson was legally in possession of the weapon but did not have a concealed carry permit that he needed to carry in his car.

According to reports, a person who specializes in speaking with children interviewed the boy.

Collins said: “The kid said he was the one who fired the gun. “We are confident that he fired the gun.”

Gun safety advocacy organization Everytown on Gun Safety reported at least 2,070 unintentional shootings of children under the age of 18 that occurred between 2015 and 2020.

This resulted in 765 deaths and 1,366 injuries, they said.

In this time frame, children unintentionally shooting firearms in these incidents ranged from toddlers and preschoolers to teenagers under the age of 18.

Adolescents aged 14 to 17 years are the largest group, children aged five and under are the second largest age group affected.

“Every year, hundreds of children in the United States have access to unsafe firearms, either installed in closets and nightstand drawers, in backpacks and purses, or left out. As Everytown for Gun Safety reports, children frequently find these unsafe guns and accidentally shoot themselves or others.
