TODAY Show weatherman Al Roker says a simple lifestyle change has helped him lose nearly 50 pounds.
The morning show veteran, who has long struggled with his weight, shared in Monday’s edition that he’s lost “about 45 pounds in the last few months” simply by cutting back on his carbs and going for daily walks.
And the 67-year-old, who survived what he once called an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer, explained his idea of exercise isn’t even that intense.
“Exercise, and not extreme exercise, improves your mental health in my opinion,” Al said. “Combined with a low-carb diet, I’ve lost about 45 pounds.”
The forecaster went on to reveal his simple weight-loss plan: “I eat about 100 grams of carbs a day and go for walks.”
In March, Al celebrated the 20th anniversary of his successful gastric bypass procedure by trying on his old, now huge, jeans.
After the procedure, Al lost more than 100 pounds – and as well as losing weight, he also had to shed his old clothes.
However, the TV presenter revealed that he made sure to salvage an important piece.
He kept the jeans he wore to the surgery as a reminder of the journey he was on.
Taking to Instagram, Al showed just how much his figure has declined over the years by sharing a photo of himself holding his pants up in front of him.
It appeared to be half the size of the garment.
In the caption, the Today star wrote: “Hard to believe it was 20 years ago today I wore these size 54 Levi jeans to my #gastric bypass at 340lbs and here I am today.
“It’s still a fight but I’m never going back.
“I have setbacks and struggles every day, but I never forget how far I’ve come.”
Two more photos were posted showing Al trying on the jeans while drowning.
Today co-host Savanna Guthrie commented: “You are so inspiring. Every day. Every minute.”
Carson Daly wrote, “You’re my Skywalker Uncle Al’s Yoda!”
A comment from Hoda & Jenna’s Instagram account read, “Nobody beats our pal Al.”
In his Stories, Al also shared a video of him trying on the pre-weight loss jeans.
“Well, on March 15th , those were the pants I wore for my gastric bypass, to my gastric bypass,” he said. “20 years later, [look].”
To take fans along on his journey, Al often shares videos of himself exercising, sharing some words of encouragement along the way.
A day after celebrating the 20th anniversary of his surgery, he posted a clip of himself on a treadmill.
Fast forward to Today, and Al gave a simple motivation to keep the weight off:
“I’m the oldest person here,” he explained, surrounded by the show’s co-hosts. “I’m just trying to hold on a little longer.”
