PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – As everyone prepares for winter weather, business is booming for local tire shops and hardware stores this week.

The snow supply is dusty as our region has not received measurable amounts of snow since last winter. But now, people in Allegheny County are scrambling to get what they need to prepare for tough conditions on the roads, driveways and sidewalks.

Customers at the McCullough Tire in Penn Hills are getting some snow as drivers get ready for whatever Mother Nature has to offer on Thursday.

Manager Dave Sarti said: “Boom, once you get the snow in the forecast we started to get busy again this past Monday.”

Sarti said customers bought all-season tires and snow tires. He also said many customers are asking for tire change and tire inspection.

“You always have to look at your tyres. Your car will tell you, just turn the wheel and look at the front tires… they are slippery, you need to take them off… regular alignment problems, you need to take them off. If you start to slide, you will know, your car will tell you. You just can’t ignore those signs,” says Sarti.

The owners of Rollier’s Hardware in Mount Lebanon are seeing an increase in shoppers who need ice shavers, defrosters and shovels.

“I need a snow shovel. Mine broke last year so I think with the snow to come, I should be better prepared,” said Jim Williams, who was shopping at Rollier’s Wednesday.

“People are scouring their garage to see what they might need, but the big seller up front is the one to thaw. They worry about the frost, can’t get out of the driveway, just need to be safe,” said Derek Satterfield, part owner of Rollier’s Hardware.

Rollier’s aisles are well stocked with winter essentials. Pet-friendly defrost machines are popular this season, Satterfield says, but there’s one thing you might not find.

“However, the snow blower is a problem. We weren’t able to get the initial amount of snow blowers and we’re not sure if we’ll get any this year,” he said.

Both Sarti and Satterfield were expecting more customers as the snowflakes began to fall.

“When it snows in the air, even if you’re not here to do it, you’re thinking about it and you’re grabbing something,” says Satterfield.

“Everyone will be here two hours before we open. They sit outside and wait to get in. We started getting cars in order, we started timing it because it was too much,” said Sarti.

Sarti says a last-minute tip for anyone on the road on Thursday is to make sure your tire pressure is good.

For the winter weather team, the plan was simple. First, they preprocess the roads. When the snow arrives, teams will enter the interstate, followed by the lower-traffic roads.
