The comedian, famous for his content on Instagram and TikTok, is said to have been visiting his mum and grandma over the holidays when tragedy struck.
New Orleans police said he did not appear to be the intended target of the shooting, which took place between two men in the store’s parking lot.
However, Montrell was sitting in his car at the time and was tragically caught in the crossfire, reports Nola.com.
His mother, Sherilyn Price, said her son was “victim not only of a stray bullet,” but of “decades of neglect that have left the youth of New Orleans with no hope for a future or fear of consequences.”

In a powerful statement, she said: “It’s time for leaders in our city and everywhere to do their jobs. It matters who is the president, who is the governor, and who is the mayor.
“Leaders create opportunities – including the opportunity to live in peace without fear of indiscriminate violence.
“As crime and violence became a concern in New Orleans, Montrell moved to Washington DC and became a comedian.”
There have not yet been any arrests related to Montrell’s death, although police have released surveillance photos of two suspects along with a gray or silver getaway car.
They also posted a photo of a woman they plan to interview – Dyamonique Smith.
Montrell was known for his comedic “Hood History” video series, in which he presented historical locations throughout Crescent City with a funny attitude.
Family attorney Juan LaFonta told Fox 8: “He was a really good guy.
“Always push forward. Never involved in anything negative.
“People need to understand that what drives such terrors isn’t greed, it’s not drugs, it’s not violent tendencies.
“It is the failure of our city’s leadership to provide adequate, even minimal, support for families and youth.”
Meanwhile, tributes for the star have arrived online, and one person wrote on Facebook: “This breaks my heart bro. Rest in peace.”
Another friend said: “It was a pleasure to work with you, my brother.
“You always talked about your children, your mother and your family. I wish I had the pleasure of meeting her…
“I can’t believe this, this is the original. We all love you man.

“My deepest condolences to all of your family, children and your mother… We also lost a family member.”
Another wrote, “Keep calm bro, thanks for the laugh.”
