PESHAWAR: Three terrorists were shot dead in two separate intelligence-gathering operations (IBOs) in Dera Ismail Khan and South Waziristan districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the military’s media wing said an IBO was carried out in Kulachi area of Dera Ismail Khan district in which two terrorists were killed in a fierce exchange of fire on November 20, 2023.
Another terrorist was executed during an operation in Kot Azam General Area of South Wazir, the ISPR said.
“Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from all three slain terrorists, who continued to be actively involved in numerous terrorist activities against security forces and innocent civilians,” the ISPR said.
Meanwhile, a 26-year-old soldier – Sepoy Shahzeb of Rawalpindi – suffered martyrdom after an improvised explosive device exploded in Gharyoum area of North Waziristan district.
“As the security forces of Pakistan are determined to eradicate the threat of terrorism, remediation operations are being carried out to eliminate all terrorists present in the area and such sacrifices by our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve,” the statement added.
Pakistan has faced a surge in terrorism in recent months, with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant groups stepping up their actions against security forces.
In response, the state has also initiated measures to curb terrorism.
The Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) found in a report released in October that security forces lost at least 386 personnel in the first nine months of 2023, the highest in eight years.
In the third quarter of 2023, around 445 people were killed and 440 were injured in up to 190 terrorist attacks and anti-terror operations.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were the main centers of violence, accounting for almost 94% of all deaths and 89% of attacks recorded during the period (including terrorist incidents and security force operations).
