Officers from Fairview Heights police and surrounding departments responded to the scene around 4:00 p.m. Thursday and found one gunshot victim. Two people were detained along Illinois’ 159th Street near the entrance to the main mall. Police are looking for a third person. Two handguns were also recovered.
The victim was in stable condition, taken to a local hospital, and then airlifted to the St. Louis. Police said everyone involved in the incident knew each other and the shooting was not random.
The shooting is believed to have happened outside the Helzberg Diamonds store. Customers in the surrounding stores hid in the back rooms until everything was clear.
On Friday, Jeremiah Handy of East St. Louis, Ronnie Edmonds of Cahokia and Andre Gillespie of East St. Louis were both charged in the incident. All are still in custody.
Handy has been charged with aggravated battery while carrying a firearm, aggravated firearm discharge, possession of a firearm without an advanced gun owner identification tag, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and obstruction of justice. The bond was fixed by the Court at $150,000.
Edmonds has been charged with Obstruction of Justice, Serious Use of Unlawful Weapons and Possession of a Firearm without a Subtle Gun Owner Identification Tag. The bond is set at $75,000.
Gillespie has been charged with aggravated Unlawful Use of Firearms and Possession of a Firearm without a Subtle Gun Owner Identification Tag. The bond is set at $40,000.
