Authorities said the gunman continued shooting at people for about two hours and 30 minutes, according to The Associated Press.
A search for the suspect is underway with help from the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Detroit Police Chief James White has urged nearby residents to be vigilant and contact authorities if they spot the suspect.
White said during a press conference: “What we want to do today is get him off the streets”

The police chief said Sunday’s four separate shootings were linked to a firearm and they suspect there was only one shooter who had no apparent link to the victims.
White said one of the shooting victims was walking a dog and another was waiting at a bus stop.
Shortly after the fatal shooting, police shared a photo of the suspect, who is “wanted for multiple fatal shootings near the DPD 12th Precinct.”
Police said in a Facebook post: “We have several officers in the area who are actively searching for this individual in the photo.
“Call 911, please do not approach him. He is believed to be armed and dangerous.”
