Instagram has about a billion monthly users – nearly triple the monthly visitors that Twitter hosts.
In a competitive nightmare for Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, account holders are flocking to Twitter and using the hashtag #instagramdown to post about the platform’s recent outage.
Instagram had a similar outage earlier this year, stranding users in a social media wilderness.
In 2012, before Facebook’s name change to Meta, Mark Zuckerberg led the company’s acquisition of Instagram for a bargain price of $1 billion.

Reports of outages peaked around 1:00 p.m. EST.
