Popham said hundreds of farms have been affected by the floods, with some still under water.

She said there are some “difficult issues” the government is dealing with around animal rights.

“We have thousands of animals that have died and we have so many more that are in dire straits and we are seeing a growing animal welfare problem.”

They’re taking the vets to the farms but Popham will have to amputate.

In addition, there are animals that have survived but are in dire need of food and supplies.

Popham said officials have reached out to feed mills and organizations across Canada to access animal feed.

“Over the last few days I have been able to FaceTime with farmers and some of them are in their barns and some of their barns are flooded and you can see dead animals,” she said.

“And it’s heartbreaking.

“This is a particularly difficult time for livestock farmers.”

The Agricultural Health and Animal Health Laboratory in the Fraser Valley was flooded, Popham added, making it an essential facility for disease testing and dairy testing. Testing centers in Alberta and Saskatchewan are now providing assistance at their testing facilities.

“These are early days in this disaster for the agricultural industry,” she added. “Things are still going, but I, along with our colleagues and the head, are committed to making sure agriculture is supported as much as possible.”

Popham said some farmers were able to pull livestock to safety when the water rose and while some were successful, others were not due to the water level becoming too high.

She also said some animals went to dryland “not very well” when they got there, but she did not elaborate.
