PROPERTY OWNERS in Bradley, Illinois can get a rebate check ranging from $50 to $800.
Mayor Mike Watson said at Monday’s village board meeting that nearly $2 million will be made available for landowners thanks to the Homeowner Property Act of 2020.
According to officials, much of the tax generated by the village is used to fund the village’s police and fire department pensions.
So the rebates apply to those who paid taxes on the village’s share of the homeowner’s tax bill that year.
The Daily Journal reported that this means taxpayers will be refunded any taxes paid for Bradley Village and Bradley Fire Service, as well as pensions paid to those two departments.
Just note that if you’ve paid taxes to other tax districts such as school districts, the Kankakee County government, and the Bourbonnais Township Park District, you’re excluded from the rebates.
Homeowners should receive checks approximately four weeks after applying.
The deadline to apply for the discounts is January 31, 2023.
What is the Homeowner’s Tax Bill?
Last year Bradley residents voted to introduce a property tax levy offering rebates to homeowners in the village.
A property tax levy is the total amount of funds that a local government entity can levy on a tax rate.
The law was passed in 2020, but due to a delay, this is the first year that taxpayers will receive a full refund.
Here’s how to grab the check
To receive the rebates, villagers must complete an application proving ownership of their property for the entirety of 2021.
They must also prove that they have paid the entire tax bill.
The application must include the addresses and property identification numbers, the name and mailing address of the owner, and the amount of village taxes paid.
Once all information is confirmed and approved, the village will issue your check for the village’s share of the taxes paid.
Property owners may pick up an application at the municipal office and must return it to the Village Treasury Office at 147 S. Michigan Ave.
Bradley’s finance director Rob Romo told the Daily Journal that they have received around 150 applications and are expecting a total of 4,000 submissions.
