Thousands of Americans are getting up to $214 per child thanks to a $44 million back-to-school pot

PARENTS struggling with the cost of school supplies can get additional help in New York in the form of one-time payments.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced direct payments of up to $214 per child on Thursday.

The money sent comes from the $44.4 million in federal pandemic funds available to the state.
The payments are managed by the State Office for Time and Disability Aid.
One-off payments of $214 will be made to welfare recipients who have a child between the ages of three and 17.
The state plans to distribute $39.3 million in benefits that it says will benefit about 184,000 children.

The governor’s office says distribution of the payments will begin today, August 12.
At the same time, those on welfare who have a child under the age of three will receive a $150 payment to help cover infant feeding costs.
For those payments, the agency expects grants worth approximately $5.1 million, which will help approximately 184,000 children.
Other states are offering help
New York isn’t the only state trying to ease the pressure of the back-to-school season on its residents.
Many states, including Texas, Missouri and Virginia, have introduced so-called “No Tax Weekends”.
This is when state residents can get their back-to-school shopping done without the added expense of traditional sales taxes.
Some states like Connecticut, New Jersey, and Illinois have extended the same tax-free grace period to a full week.
These tax exemptions usually all come with a monetary limit on tax-exempt purchases, so make sure you know the guidelines for your state before spending.

These direct payments are some of the ways that world leaders are still trying to ease the pain of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition, dozens of cities and states are offering Universal Basic Income payments.
