Thomas Tuchel will never challenge for the title until he rectifies the Blues’ lack of leadership

THOMAS TUCHEL has a big problem in attack.

And until it’s fixed Chelsea have absolutely no chance of ever challenging Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title.

To put it simply, this blues troupe lacks real firepower and real cutting edge.

It’s not an issue unrelated to City or Liverpool, whose attackers score goals for fun.

And while Chelsea are set to buy several new defenders this summer, it will take more than money to solve their problems at the top.

The Blues’ 1-0 defeat by Everton on Sunday came despite 17 shots on target, with the hosts having nine.

Chelsea had 20 shots on Real Madrid’s eight as the Spaniards triumphed 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

And they only scored once in 21 attempts in the 4-1 defeat by Brentford.

Mason Mount, a converted midfielder, is Chelsea’s top scorer with 10 goals.

That’s more than strikers Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner combined.

And it’s also the same total of Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi combined.

Even the return of Kai Havertz with seven goals is not nearly enough to take over the role of No. 9.

And whether it’s the system or the style of play, Chelsea’s lack of goals from their key attackers are hampering results more than ever.

Like England at the 2018 World Cup, the Blues doubled down on their weaknesses to create an impressive side last season – which led to Champions League glory.

But it’s been almost a year since then and Chelsea looks like things are getting worse.

Tuchel has proven he’s the right man on the Stamford Bridge dugout.

However, new direction needs to be found in terms of how forwards perform when they just don’t pull their weight.

It feels like every attacker who joins Chelsea now will meet the exact same fate – even Erling Haaland.
