This leaderless government is failing us in the cost of living crisis – it should stop the race for leadership now and focus

INFLATION has reached 10.1 percent and continues to rise, the highest level in 40 years.

Families on tight budgets spend £10 more per week on weekly shopping.

Prospects preach to converts while the cost of living rises

Wages have fallen 3 per cent in real terms, fuel bills have risen by nearly £3,000, mortgages could double and businesses are hitting the wall.

So what is this leaderless Conservative government doing about it?
Absolutely sweet FA.

It spends the summer running a two-horse lead race that could have ended in two weeks.

We can say goodbye to the idea that Boris will quietly leave the building
So long for Christopher Meyer, a man whose smile was as bright as his socks

Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak ramble on about the choice between tax cuts or “handouts” to the 160,000, mostly wealthy, card-carrying Tories who will pick the next PM. No word on cuts to bloated £1 trillion government spending budget.

The prospects preach to the converts, not the millions, including Sun readers who have no say but are already struggling to put bread on the table.

Mime of leadership

Parliament is now empty and incumbent Prime Minister Boris Johnson has moved out of Downing Street.

Union leader Sir Keir Starmer has a bailout plan but has no idea how to pay for it. And the Bank of England is sleeping at the wheel while the economy goes down the drain.

This abject political mismanagement is a national scandal, a grotesque dereliction of duty.

“Nothing happens,” complains Tory Peer and Asda boss Stuart Rose.

“The captain of the ship is on shore leave. Nobody is responsible.

“This is a crisis. The train is going through the tunnel and will run over a lot of people.”

This is Boris Johnson’s last chance to see Churchillian before he shuffles onto Civvy Street.

From his sun lounger in balmy Greece, he should telephone Sir Graham Brady, the Tory backbench chief responsible for this managerial pantomime.

And order him today to end the contest immediately so the new Prime Minister will be present for an emergency session of Parliament next week.

No excuses will be accepted.
