‘This is what West Ham is about’

WEST HAM hero Anton Ferdinand has urged boss David Moyes to give the youth a chance in the Hammers’ last four Premier League games.

The Londoners are currently seventh in the league with games still to be played against Arsenal, Norwich, Manchester City and Brighton.

But Moyes’ men are fully focused on their Europa League campaign with a May final berth up for grabs.

However, West Ham are currently 2-1 behind Eintracht Frankfurt and will go into the semi-final second leg on Thursday.

Rotation will be key if the Hammers are to secure a historic win in Germany.

West Ham have been plagued by injuries at the back.

Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma and Issa Diop all have spells on the sidelines.

And last weekend’s narrow 1-0 defeat by Chelsea in the London derby saw fan favorite Craig Dawson sent off for a tackle on Romelu Lukaku, leaving Moyes possibly with only Zouma as his only absolute centre-back for Sunday’s clash against Arsenal.

Ferdinand, who has been promoted at West Ham, wants Moyes to reach out to some of their youth stars for the remainder of his Prem campaign in a bid to protect first-team players from a possible European final.

One of those being talked about is U23 captain Aji Alese, who impressed in the narrow 1-0 Europa League group stage defeat by Dinamo Zagreb as the ‘academy of football’ was on full display.

The 21-year-old centre-back fielded an inexperienced defense on a night that featured SEVEN academy stars.

When Alese was given a chance in the top flight, Ferdinand exclusively told SunSport: “As a West Ham fan and someone who’s come through the ranks as a player, I’d love to see a manager trust him.

“Will it be difficult for him? 100 percent it will.

“But one thing you have with West Ham fans is if it’s someone who comes through the ranks they get their full support and I know that first hand.”

Ferdinand has hinted to right-back Ben Johnson why Moyes should place more faith in West Ham’s academy stars.

Johnson has played 31 times for the Hammers this season and at times was preferred to Czech bargain hunter Vladimir Coufal.

Ferdinand continued: “Fourth place is unattainable for us. If I were Moyes – and who shall I say – but if I were Moyes I would play youngsters like Alese.

“We could possibly need people knocking on the door.

“It’s not just him, there are others who could play. Jamal Baptiste is another fantastic centre-back. I would try them, that’s what West Ham is about.”

“In the last four games, as a West Ham fan and someone who’s come through the ranks, I’d like to see a few more young players get the opportunity.

“Look at Ben Johnson. He’s been a pillar this year. He was fantastic, to the point where he was [Vladimir] Coufal came back and kept him off the team.

“I know we have more of them in the youth system. It’s West Ham United and that’s what we do; we produce.”
