Nicky finally contacted Sally, the object of his decades-long affection, this week This is us. And her barely remember him at first. But how the episode ends is very different from how it begins: Long story short, we now know who Nicky Pearson will be in a glimpse of the Pearson family’s future.

Speaking of which, is anyone else a little taken aback by the way the show gently transports us into its final season? Milo Ventimiglia recently warned that Episode 4 Will Destroy Us – what if it was the heartbreaking carnage that didn’t stop from then on?

I was skewered. Read on for the highlights of “One Giant Leap.” (And make sure to run through all the flash clues here, then read our Interview with the scriptwriter and director of the episode about what lies ahead for Rebecca and Miguel.)

‘INCANDESCENT’ | Let’s deal with Déja and Malik first. Randall and Beth think Their daughter will stay with her friend, Tiffany, overnight. But she actually took the bus to Cambridge, Mass., to meet “my boyfriend,” she told the kind elderly woman sitting next to her. When she got there, Janelle ran to greet her, and Malik was equally excited. The plan: Jennifer, Janelle’s mother, will take her daughter for the day, so Malik and Déja have time to hang out. Déja was a bit surprised – she and Jennifer had never met before – but Malik’s ex, who was in a hurry, barely hurled a “hey girl” at Déja before she packed up her things. Janelle and left.

Déja quickly realizes that Malik is having a hard time keeping up with Harvard’s academic rigor and is Janelle’s (very good) father. So she told him to take a few hours and finish the Russian Literature paper he was working on, and she would be there when he was done. Gratefully, he took off and returned home later to find her wearing a really cool red dress. “Wow, you look like incandescent,” he breathed. “OK, Harvard,” she joked. Then he tells her that he loves her.

They went to the party, but they were only there briefly when she announced that she was ready, both to go home and watch The Sex. Once he realizes what’s going on, he’ll be super into the plan. Back at Malik’s apartment, they’re both extremely nervous; at one point, he placed her palm on his bare chest so she could feel how fast his heart was beating. After that, they kissed and lay back… and then, they lay wrapped around each other on the bed. “I will feel this way forever, just this, with you,” she whispered. Malik’s face is in the dark, so it’s hard to tell how this happened.

On the bus home, Randall texts Déja, asking how breakfast is at Tiffany’s. She smiled as she typed, “Change your life.”

this-is-us-recap-season-6-episode-2A SMALL STEP FOR A PEARL… | About Nicky! As Rebecca ordered last week, she, Miguel and Nicky will be taking a small trip to visit Sally – aka his pre-Vietnam girlfriend. As they drew closer, Nicky grew more and more nervous. And when they stopped at an antiques store to pick up a gift – Nick wanted to bring Sally an old camera, in recognition of her love of photography – he nearly missed the trip. The cause of his anxiety was revealed when he admitted that he had never really had contact with Sally, and the fact that he wasn’t even sure if the woman they were visiting.” to be mine Sally. ” Rebecca, who really has no time for this nonsense, negotiates a good price for the camera in question and points out that they are 20 minutes from Sally’s house, so “We won’t let you have to. annoy.”

And Rebecca makes good on that promise. She and Miguel lead Nicky to the door and when he chokes, explain what’s going on. The confused woman who answered the door was actually Nicky’s Sally… but she barely remembered him at first. Finally, their brief foreplay came back to her, and she invited everyone to join. That’s when we learned that she started working for a pharmaceutical company in the late 1970s, that she was filmed topless dancing in Martin Scorsese’s Woodstock documentary and she’s married to a guy named Eric (played by Jeffrey Nordling, Big Little Lies/Nashville). Womp-womp!

Nicky takes this as his sign to run, but Sally suggests they stay for dinner, and they eventually agree. The conversation was odd (“You broke me in the moonlight that men just passed,” Nicky told her at one point) and felt uncomfortable after Sally joked that “In a minute There, I thought I had early-onset Alzheimer’s. Or not just early, simply senile Alzheimer’s. ” Rebecca and Miguel were clearly empty-handed, and a few minutes later, Rebecca exclaimed, “I do have Alzheimer’s disease. She starts a monologue about how you think such a diagnosis will keep you from breaking a sweat over something trivial, but that’s not the case. Sally apologizes, Rebecca says it’s nothing. Eric, Miguel, and Nicky contribute by estimating how much time they’ve lost over the years, worrying about silly things. Situation eased! Then Nicky wonders how long he’s spent thinking about Sally – “Dozens of years maybe?” – and the situation gets awkward again!

this-is-us-recap-season-6-episode-2LOOKING FOR SMALL EMPLOYEES | But here’s an evolved Nicky we’re dealing with, because he’s trying to keep the conversation going in a way that makes it clear that he doesn’t think time thinking about her is wasted, and he doesn’t. sorry about that. Eric jumps in with a joke and tries to switch the meal to dessert, but it seems that Sally also unexpectedly likes to tell the truth. “I regret buying our satellite dish. Once we got it, our cave became Eric’s hideout,” she told everyone, adding that she and her husband don’t do anything together anymore. Eric asks her not to introduce their business in front of strangers. But Sally is ON. ONE ROLLER. “They’re not strangers, Eric. Nicky is an old friend who has been chasing me for 50 years while you treat me like a cook,” she said. “I’ve known him longer than I’ve known him. The only reason I don’t tell the little things is because the big things leave me with no room to worry about anything else.”

Rebecca and Sally then retreat to her office, where they realize they’ve both become self-conscious about their looks; Sally wondered when they stopped wanting to see their own reflections. Rebecca says she used to enjoy salsa dancing with Miguel, but a woman made a rude comment once and Rebecca never came back. The women have some drinks and drink some Polaroids; At the end of the evening, Nicky pocketed one.

When it was time to leave, Nicky kissed Sally on the cheek and said, “See you in 50 years?” She smiled, said, “I’ll save the date.” In the car, Rebecca apologizes to Miguel for the ordeal ahead. “In sickness and in health,” he reminded her, adding that he “will amaze you every step of the way… We will do this together.” Then she announced that she wanted to go salsa dancing again, and we see them do so at the end of the hour.

Rebecca also tells Nicky that the universe will put the right people in his way, to which he replies that Jack would love that Miguel and Rebecca found each other.

FLASH FRONT LAMP! | And now the first jump of the final season! As Nicky is frolicking in the present with a flight attendant on his trip back to Pennsylvania (to oversee the construction of that big house), the action moves on to the sequel as Rebecca lays in bed. sick. Randall and Déja stood on the porch and watched as the car sped up. The woman walking out is named Edie… and she happens to be a flight attendant dealing with Nicky in the current storyline. Randall hugs her and thanks her for coming; she wondered how his mother was. “They said it wouldn’t be long. Everyone was just trying to get her there in time,” he replied sadly.

this-is-us-recap-season-6-episode-2Then Nicky stepped out onto the porch and kissed her. “I miss you,” she said. “I miss you more,” he replied. He hugs her really hard, and when Brandi Carlile’s “Right on Time” plays in the background, we get a glimpse of the diamond ring on her left hand: Unless there’s some sort of flip. Strange reverse happens here, according to the plot, Edie is clearly Nicky’s wife.

Currently, Nicky flirts with Edie (played by Vanessa Bell Calloway, Go to USA/Shameless) about not wanting to return the seat to the upright and fully locked position. She joked that she was glad she brought her duct tape. Then he did as she said, smiling warmly when he said, “All you have to do is ask.” Mine, mine, mine… Nicky has a little game in him, after all!
