But it was Kyrgios’ anger on the pitch that took center stage.

After losing the first set in a tiebreak, Kyrgios was dismissed by the referee and then received a point penalty for smashing his racquet on the floor and against the chair.

After a double fault on serve broke him early in the second set, the 27-year-old Australian tried to break his racquet again and walked away in anger.

The no-nonsense referee gave him a match penalty, meaning he lost a game and was 2-0 down, while the tournament director was then called in to try and calm the enraged world No. 78.

However, Kyrgios later took to Instagram to say he had lost his composure after suffering heinous racist abuse from the crowd.

He wrote: “When will this stop? Dealing with racial slurs from the crowd?

“I understand my behavior isn’t always the best – but ‘you little BLACK SHEEP,’ ‘Shut up and play’… little comments like that are NOT ACCEPTABLE. If I take revenge on the crowd, I get punished. That’s screwed up.”

As for Murray, he has reached his first grass final since winning Wimbledon in 2016.

The Scot beamed: “It’s been a long road since the last final, it’s been a few years, lots of ups and downs.

“But I kept going, I kept working and eventually managed to get to another one.

“So I’m happy and proud of the effort I put in to get back there.

“I was a bit more solid in the tie-break, I made a lot of returns, asked the question to him.

“When these courses are played quickly, sets often drop to a point or two.

“At the end of the first set I was a bit more solid and confident. The first set was of high quality.

“In the second set Nick was very frustrated and I didn’t have to work that hard.

“You always fight against yourself and the opponent on the pitch. It’s one of the difficult things in individual sports.

“Look, Nick has the potential to be one of the best players in the world, there’s absolutely no doubt about that.

“But he was obviously very frustrated and made it a lot easier for me.

“I’m happy to be in the final. I played well this week and got a great opportunity against Matteo.”
