“Thirty dead and over 100 wounded” after a “Russian” missile hit a train station in Ukraine used to evacuate civilians

Thirty people were reportedly killed and more than 100 injured in a rocket attack on a train station as civilians tried to evacuate to safer parts of the country.

Shocking footage shows smoke billowing from Kramatorsk railway station in eastern Ukraine after reports it was hit by Russian troops.

The state railway company said two Russian missiles hit the train station used to evacuate civilians from areas bombed by Russian forces.

More than 30 people were killed and over 100 injured, according to the Ukrainian railway chief.

“Two rockets hit the Kramatorsk train station,” Ukrainian Railways said in a statement.

She later added: “According to operational data, more than 30 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the rocket attack on the Kramatorsk train station.”

Russia did not immediately comment on the reports of the attack and the number of casualties.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor of the Donetsk region, said thousands of people were at the station when the rocket hit.

“The ‘Rashists’ (‘Russian Fascists’) knew very well what they were aiming for and what they wanted: they wanted to sow panic and fear, they wanted to take as many civilians with them as possible,” he said.

Kyrylenko posted a photo online showing several bodies on the ground next to stacks of suitcases and other luggage.

Armed police in flak jackets stood beside them.

Another photo showed emergency services appearing to be fighting a fire, with a plume of gray smoke billowing into the air.

Three trains carrying evacuees were blocked on Thursday in the same region of Ukraine after an airstrike on the line, according to the head of the Ukrainian Railways.

Ukrainian officials say Russian forces have regrouped for a new offensive and that Moscow plans to seize as much territory as possible in the eastern part of Ukraine known as Donbass, on the border with Russia.

Local authorities in some areas have urged civilians to leave the country while it is still possible and relatively safe to do so.
