‘There have been mistakes in the past’

ANTONIO CONTE revealed he was surprised by the departure of Tottenham in the last transfer window.
The Spurs boss believes it shows the club have made mistakes with past signings.
Tanguy NdombeleGiovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gill leave on loan while Dele Alli joins Everton on a long-term agreement.
Conte “Sure, it was weird,” said. It is strange to loan and sell a player in the January transfer window. It’s weird because it means something went wrong in the past.
“Strange, I repeat in January to send four players on loan, and sell one player. It means maybe in the past you have to see what you did. And perhaps to understand that there have been some mistakes in the past.
“Because normally you have to buy players to reinforce your team. But if you’re loaning out players that you’ve bought in the last two or three years, it means maybe you did something wrong in the past.”
Asked if he was looking forward to losing too many players, Conte added: “Honestly, before going to Tottenham, to read the list of players that you have in the squad, I consider all the players. The players are all important players.
“Because of Ndombele, we paid a lot and the same goes for Lo Celso and Gil. Only then, when you are in that situation, do you understand very well what is the best solution for the club and for the players in this moment.

“Definitely losing four players in January, I repeat it is not normal.
“We have shared the decision with the club and the players. But I repeat, it means something wrong happened in the past.
“Usually you buy players to strengthen your team, you don’t lose players after one, two or three years.
“For this reason, we must pay more attention in the future when shopping about the choice of players. It becomes of fundamental importance if we want to strengthen the quality of the team.
“Otherwise, when you go to strengthen the quality of your team, you will drop the quality of your team.”
Despite his comments about the departure, Conte feels the Spurs squad has improved.
Before tomorrow’s FA Cup fourth round match at home against Brighton, he said: “The squad is more complete.
“In the past, if we had an injury, I was in trouble. Certainly, the lineup is now more complete.
“We tried to fill the right role with a midfielder in Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski who can play as number 10 and he can also play at full-back.
“We’re more complete now than before.”
