The worst solar storms in history – from the Halloween solar flare to the Carrington Incident that started burning

The SUN blesses us with warmth and light, however, it can also erupt violently, causing sunspots that can affect the Earth.

ONE solar flame is a term used by astronomers to describe eruptions of electromagnetic radiation that occur in the Sun’s atmosphere.

The phenomenon occurs when accelerated charge carriers (mainly electrons) collide with the plasma medium.

And while the sun’s rays can’t travel far enough to hurt people here on Earth, electromagnetic radiation and energetic particles can “temporarily alter the upper atmosphere.” , creating disruptions in signal transmission from GPS satellites,” NASA officials said in a statement.

Another unusual phenomenon associated with solar flare is known as circular mass ejection (CME), NASA officials added.

Proof of Solar radiation, hurricanes and CMEs have been recorded throughout history about 500 years.

And some of these solar phenomena have had serious effects on our planet – here are some of the worst phenomena humanity has ever known.

1859: The Carrington Incident

The Carrington event – named after the astronomer who witnessed it, Richard Carrington – was the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history.

It occurred on September 1-2, 1859 during the 10th solar cycle, and was likely the result of a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun cooled by the Earth’s magnetosphere.

In fact, the storm was so intense it produced powerful auroras around the world and caused sparks and fires in some telegraph systems.

Experts predict that a storm of this magnitude in modern times would cause power outages and widespread blackouts.

1972: Solar Flare takes over AT&T

In August 1972, a series of extremely powerful solar storms took place across North America and even parts of Vietnam.

Specifically, on August 4, a huge solar flare broke out, disrupting long-distance telephone communications across many states in the US.

“That event, in effect, caused AT&T to redesign the electrical system for the transatlantic cable,” NASA said of the ratio.

2000: Bastille Day event

In July 2000, one of the strongest solar storms since 1989 occurred on the same day France celebrated its national Bastille Day.

This event included a solar flare, solar particle event and solar mass ejection, which short-circuited several satellites and also resulted in some radio blackouts.

Additionally, this particular geomagnetic storm was so intense that it was recorded as an X5 hurricane on the solar flare scale.

2003: Halloween Solar Storm

The Halloween solar storms are a series of solar outbursts and CMEs that occurred between mid-October and early November 2003.

The worst, however, happened just before Halloween, on October 28.

The solar storm was so strong that it shorted the sensor of the spacecraft that was hoping to be able to measure it.

The sensor stopped at X28, which was already a pretty intense big fire, but was later revealed to actually stand around X45, according to NASA.

2005: Solar Storm Holiday Season

On December 5, 2005, a powerful X-class solar flare erupted.

According to a NASA account, the event recorded an intense X9 magnitude on the space weather scale and “disrupted communications from the satellite to the ground and the navigation signals of the Global Positioning System. (GPS) in about 10 minutes,” according to a NASA account.

According to NOAA, the solar storm even damaged the X-ray instrument located on the GOES 13 satellite that was trying to image it.
