The £200 reward had been offered by weary officials and local residents to stop the monkey’s terrorist attacks.

Wildlife experts in Madhya Pradesh used a drone to find the monkey, shot it with a tranquilizer dart and then placed it in a cage.

The wild animal had reportedly attacked at least 20 people, including eight children, during the two-week period.

Officials said the notorious attacker often perched on rooftops and on window sills – apparently in search of his next targets.

Many of those attacked suffered deep cuts that required stitches.

NDTV reported that a surveillance camera in the area caught footage of the animal pouncing on an elderly man before dragging him to the ground.

The attack, which lasted several seconds, left the man with a deep wound on his thigh.

Local official Vinod Sahu said, “The community did not have the resources to capture this monkey.”

“We contacted the District Collector and with their help called a rescue team from the Ujjain Forest Service.

“The community staff and local residents helped them, but it still took four hours to capture the monkey.”

He added: “We had put up a £200 cash prize for catching the monkey. We will now give him to the animal rescue team.”

Gaurav Gupta, a forest official, said the local team in Rajgarh had been trying unsuccessfully to capture the monkey for the past two weeks.

He said: “We have contacted special teams in several districts.

“As soon as the Ujjain team was available, they rushed to Rajgarh and after a four-hour operation, we captured the monkey.”

The official added: “Most likely, it will be released in a dense forest area so that it cannot harm people.”

This comes after a group of monkeys caused the death of a three-year-old boy in Telangana, India, after reportedly knocking a boulder off a roof, crushing the child to death.
