The West must ensure Ukraine defeats Russia – every NATO member must now increase defense spending

IF the invasion of Ukraine was an attempt to revive Russia’s superpower status, it was a complete flop.

There was no clear strategy, no effective command and control, no logistical support, and absolutely no appreciation for Ukraine’s fearless desire to stay and fight.

As international sanctions kick in and countries like Britain bolster the valiant Ukrainian armed forces with anti-tank weapons, surely Putin knows he can’t win? Unfortunately, this war is far from over.

And if we don’t help put out this fire in Ukraine, it will spread to other parts of Europe.

To date, we only do enough to make sure they don’t lose – but not enough to guarantee they can win.

Putin may have misjudged Ukraine’s determination to hold its own, but he was spot on when he believed that NATO would have no appetite for direct involvement.

Russia has “now lost 30,000 soldiers” in Putin’s disastrous war in Ukraine.

Make no mistake, Putin wants to win it. His invasion didn’t come out of the blue.

And now he’s moving ever closer to a powerful China that shares Russia’s disdain for Western standards and values. This is indeed a dangerous turning point in our history.

How we resist rising authoritarianism over the next few months could have major implications for how the next decade unfolds.

Let’s deny no more. The past 30 years have been a walk in the park compared to what lies ahead. European security is once again at risk.

Nevertheless, we continue to hesitate. Europe needs leadership.

It is our duty to rise again. All NATO countries must increase defense spending to at least three percent.

When Putin loses in Ukraine and the futility of his war is exposed, there is every chance that the Russian people will eventually find that they are better off without him.
