Officials said there is a “meticulous” planning process that begins up to a year in advance.

Col. Chris Cruise, commander of the 576th Flight Test Squadron, said: Make no mistake – our nuclear triad is the cornerstone of the national security of our country and our allies around the world.

“This planned test launch demonstrates how our country’s ICBM fleet exemplifies our weapons system readiness and reliability.

Air Force officials have announced that there have been more than 300 missile tests previously.

The Minuteman III ICBM can fly at speeds of 15,000 mph and has a range of more than 6,000 miles.

The test comes just weeks after US officials delayed the launch of an ICBM.

John Kirby of the National Security Council revealed that Washington “wants to demonstrate the behavior of a responsible nuclear power by reducing the risk of misjudgment and misperception.”

He added: “This is a long-planned test, but it is being postponed to clear up any misunderstandings given the PRC’s actions in Taiwan.”

Tensions between China and Taiwan appeared to be rising after spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping had previously warned US President Joe Biden that “if you play with fire, you will get burned”.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the world was reportedly staring at the “loaded gun” of a possible nuclear Armageddon.

He made the remarks while visiting the Japanese city of Hiroshima on the 77th anniversary of the first atomic bombing.
