The tragic death of Anne Rice

Anne Rice’s novels are so vivid and complex that it’s no surprise that more than one has been exploited for a live-action film adaptation. The book “Interview with the Vampire” kicked off her literary career, and it helped Rice achieve greater pop-culture fame as she wrote the screenplay for the big-screen adaptation. by director Neil Jordan nearly 20 years later. Starring Brad Pitt as the immortal vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac, Tom Cruise as the unruly vampire Lestat, and Kirsten Dunst as the young vampire Claudia, “Interview with the Vampire” brought down opened in theaters in 1994. Although the film had a sluggish opening weekend, Box Office Mojo reminds us that “Interview” has grossed $223.7 million worldwide.

1994 turned out to be a pivotal year in Rice’s life, as it not only saw the debut of “Interview” but also “Exit to Eden”. Addressed in a much lighter and witty tone of voice than “Interview,” “Exit to Eden” is another one of Rice’s novels that she adapted into a feature film (via IMDb). The film is directed by Garry Marshall and stars Rosie O’Donnell and Dan Aykroyd. Then, in 2002, her book “The Queen of the Damned” – the third entry in the “Chronicles of Vampires” series – was brought to the big screen. With Aaliyah’s final role, the film reintroduces Lestat to audiences, this time played by Stuart Townsend (via IMDb).

The interest in seeing Rice’s work come to life on screens of all sizes continues. At the time of writing, AMC has ordered a series of movie adaptations of “Live of Mayfair Witches” (via The Hollywood Reporter). The news came just a few months after we learned the network was available cast Sam Reid as Lestat for the new adaptation of “Interview with the Vampire”.
