In 2006, Studio Ghibli’s “Tales from Earthsea” hit theaters and introduced an all-star cast that included Timothy Dalton, Cheech Marin and Willem Dafoe among the English dub talent. In the film, Dafoe voices the villain, Lord Cob, who was banished for manipulating the dead in an attempt to gain power. Dafoe has done an outstanding job in capturing Lord Cob’s sinister behavior as the wizard delves into dark magic in search of eternal life.
Portraying such a character allowed Dafoe’s voice actor talent to flourish throughout the visually stunning storytelling. Studio Ghibli is famous for using veteran actors to portray characters in their movies, and Willem Dafoe Credits as a Voice Actor just continued to grow, which explains their decision to work with him on the project.
“Tales from Earthsea” is possibly one of the more overlooked films in the Studio Ghibli library, with average reviews of Rotten Tomatoes. Still, it stays true to the whimsical nature that the company’s film buffs adore. “Tales from Earthsea” is one of the lesser-known roles in Dafoe’s impressive and decades-long résumé, but like other Ghibli films, the vocal performance is almost enough reason to give it a chance.
