With one of the only two voice acting roles in her career to date – the other being in the video game “True Crime: New York City” in 2005 – Mariska Hargitay plays Tenar in the movie “Tales” from Earthsea” by Studio Ghibli “directed by Gorō Miyazaki, son of Hayao Miyazaki. The film is one of many films by the animation studio based on pre-existing books or manga, with the story coming up from the “Earthsea” book series by Ursula K. Le Guin. The story follows a shaman named Sparrowhawk and a young prince named Arren who go on a journey with a teenage girl named Theru and a Sparrowhawk’s old friend, Tenar, to stop an evil force trying to achieve immortality, no matter the cost.

Although Studio Ghibli’s projects were initially made with a Japanese cast, almost always with an English dub. Because these movies are so loved around the world, it takes a lot of effort to create a quality dub. This means that many familiar names play the characters here, like Willem Dafoe, Timothy Dalton, Cheech Marin, and obviously Hargitay. Hargitay’s character Tenar is an elderly woman who knew Sparrowhawk in her youth, when he helped her escape her harsh life as a nun. She raised Theru on her own and became an important ally of the mage and prince in their journey.
