A road-legal British racing car is up for auction and, being a totally unique model, is expected to fetch in excess of £300,000 when it comes under the hammer.

The Speed ​​12 looked like a race car that happens to be road legal, but was so powerful and difficult to drive as a prototype that the decision was made not to go ahead with a production run.

TVR and then-boss Peter Wheeler weren’t known for shirking a challenge, but even the company’s top man (who drove other models in his spare time) thought it was too much of a handful for buyers.

Developed with the intention of keeping up with the famous McLaren F1, the Speed ​​12 features a 7.7 liter V12 petrol engine.

The powerplant produced around 850 hp while the car weighed only around 1,000 kg, so acceleration was fierce.

TVR built a Speed ​​12 road car – consisting of street car, prototype and race parts – and sold it to a buyer who Wheeler personally screened to ensure it was going to the right home.
