Mr. Brenner designed the penny in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln.

The obverse shows Lincoln’s head, while the reverse contains two ears of wheat.

Since there is no mint mark on this particular penny, it generally adds to its value.

The coin sold for an impressive $2,230 on eBay after receiving 22 bids.

The value of double die coins

Double die refers to an error that occurs during the hitting process.

The metal parts used to create the coin’s features strike multiple times to embed the image or text.

However, if the die is misaligned, letters, numbers and images will be marked twice in slightly different places on some coins.

These slugs can be of great value to coin collectors.

In average condition, the USA Coin Book estimates the value of these 1955 double-stamp coins at or around $1,318.

When the coins are in mint condition, the price shoots up to somewhere between $4,261 and $17,057.

How to recognize it

You don’t have to do much to spot a duplicate cube as the error is quite noticeable.

Another thing to watch out for with these special pennies is the lack of a mint mark.

According to the US Mint, in the early years of minting, Philadelphia was the only branch that operated, so marking the coin was not necessary.

However, when other coins are missing a mint mark, it’s usually a flaw that collectors say drives up the price.

How to check the value of your coin

Make sure you check your loose change for rare pennies, nickels, dimes and others as many of these coins could sell for thousands.

Typically, the most valuable coins are those with a low mintage or flaw, as this makes them rare.

A great site to check if your coins are worth anything is eBay.

All you have to do is search the full coin name, select the “sold” list, and then toggle the search to “highest value”.

If your coins are rare and valuable, you can sell them on eBay or visit a specialized site like Coinappraiser or USA Coin Book.
